The Swiss Football League (SFL), the International Football Institute (IFI) and the Schaffhausen University Institute (HSSH) have been offering the SFL Sports Director course for the first time since September 2025.
As part of the first edition of this course, Dr Vitus Derungs led the module on football law, lecturing on important practical topics, in particular the legal specifics of player transfer and loan deals.
Other topics covered in the football law module included work permits for players from third countries in Switzerland, the transfer windows in Switzerland, the regulations governing the SFL’s squad size limit, and the legal requirements for player agency in Switzerland.

Is there a more charming place in Zurich to host an event for the Zurich Sports Lawyers than the Oerlikon Open Velodrome, with bike races, beer, and bratwurst? Hardly!
We were pleased to welcome Luana Bergamin, President of Swiss Cycling, Patrick Müller, law student and Head of Competitive Sports at Swiss Cycling, and colleague Yvan Morf, stadium speaker at the Oerlikon Open Velodrome. During a live talk, our guests offered interesting insights into the cycling business, particularly the organisation of professional cycling teams and the marketing of the major cycling tours.
We then enjoyed an exclusive behind-the-scenes tour of the facility and finally rounded off the evening comfortably in the racetrack stands, engaging in lively conversations with colleagues.

Vitus Derungs has attended the FIFA Legal Annual Review 2026 in Budapest, getting an update on the impact of recent rulings of the European Court of Justice (CJEU) on football law, on the jurisprudence of the FIFA Football Tribunal, the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) and the Swiss Federal Tribunal (SFT), and on new developments concerning the FIFA Regulations on the Status and Transf of Players (RSTP).

A European club failed to take the necessary steps to extend its African player's residence permit. As a result, after a holiday in Africa, the player was unable to re-enter Europe. The club then unilaterally terminated the employment contract, arguing that the player had breached the contract by failing to return to the club following his holiday, thus not fulfilling his work obligations.
The Dispute Resolution Chamber of the FIFA Football Tribunal ruled that the club's actions constituted a breach of contract and awarded the player, who was represented by our firm, compensation equivalent to the remaining value of his employment contract, less the earnings from an employment contract subsequently signed with a new club.
