Attorney Dr. Vitus Derungs attended the International Sports Law Conference of the Italian Sports Lawyers Association (AIAS) in Naples.

The two-day conference addressed the latest topics in the world of sports law, with a particular focus on anti-doping law, the impact of international court decisions – Seraing, Diarra, Semenya – on sports law, and the latest case law from the FIFA Football Tribunal, the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS), and the Swiss Federal Supreme Court in arbitration appeals.

Another event organised by the Zurich Sports Lawyers, this time at the Sports Office of the City of Zurich in the Letzigrund Stadium.

We had the pleasure of welcoming the Zurich’s City Councillor and Head of the Department of Education and Sports, Filippo Leutenegger, as well as the Director of the Sports Department, Attorney at Law Urs Schmidig. During a live talk, the two guests provided interesting insights into the structure of the City Sports Office, the organisation of major sporting events in Zurich – such as the UCI Cycling World Championships 2024, the UEFA Women's Football European Championship 2024, and the upcoming IIHF Ice Hockey World Championship 2026 – as well as the endless story of the new Hardturm Stadium construction.

Finally, we coud round off a relaxed evening with an Apéro Riche and networking among colleagues in the VIP area of Letzigrund Stadium.

Before the Dispute Resolution Chamber (DRC) of the FIFA Football Tribunal, we successfully defended a football club from Asia against the claim of a player, who had opened a procedure against the club based on a contractual offer.

As we could demonstrate that the contractual offer was not meant to be binding by the parties, the claim of the player was considered as unjustified and therefore was fully rejected.

On behalf of a Swiss player agency, we successfully secured bonus claims from a Cypriot club in the UEFA Conference League, thus enforcing the player agency's claim against that club.

In principle, all due and plausible claims against clubs entitled to UEFA bonuses for participation in a UEFA club competition can be enforced by means of attachment in accordance with the Swiss Federal Act on Debt Enforcement and Bankruptcy (SchKG).

The prerequisite is that the claim to be enforced has a sufficient connection to Switzerland. This is the case if the creditor has his or her residence or business domicile in Switzerland, or if the obligation was established in Switzerland or is to be fulfilled here.

Once the bonus claims have been seized, it is in the debtor's interest to meet the claim in order to receive the remaining part of the bonus from UEFA.

Another successful event by the Zurich Sports Lawyers Network, this time at On, the young and global success story for running shoes from Switzerland.

After an impressive tour through the On Labs, the headquarters of On in Zurich West, we welcomed Nicola Spirig (OLY) and enjoyed a fascinating live talk with her about her career as a triathlete and her work for On. Finally, we rounded off the evening with pizza and good conversations with colleagues at Ristorante Cucina Bernoulli.

It was once again a pleasure for me to organize this event for the Zurich Sports Lawyers Network with my colleague Remo Decurtins.
